Obituary for Anton "Tony" Wolf

Anton “Tony” Wolf was born on March 3, 1931 in Zeeland, North Dakota to Mathias and Theresa (Zahn) Wolf. He was one of 13 children who grew up on the family farm. Tony graduated from high school and was drafted into the Army in which he served for two years. After serving in the Army he decided to serve in the Air Force and ended up retiring as a Master Sergeant. Tony would serve three Vietnam tours and while on one of his deployments ended up receiving the letters from a young lady named Louise Whitfield. Louise was inspired to write her fellow GI’s from an Ann Landers article that encouraged people to write the GI’s. Louise and Tony would correspond until they would finally meet in person. They would marry on June 5, 1971 in St. Mary Catholic Church in Shaw.

Tony would go again on deployment to Thailand; he and Louise would keep in contact by recording cassette tapes for each other. Eventually, Tony would honorably discharge from the Air Force in 1973 and would eventually go to work at the Agripac  cannery where he started as a mechanic assistant, being promoted later to a labeler. This would also when he settled in Turner, Oregon.

Besides work, Tony loved to be involved with his church. He would say the rosary on a regular basis, volunteer at the KC breakfast washing dishes and making Rueben sandwiches for the Oktoberfest and Steam Up. He was also a member of the AARP, Sergeants Association-NCAA and Local 670.

Tony would chop wood, work in his garden (growing tomatoes, blackberries, garlic, grapes, strawberries and much more!) and enjoyed traveling. Each year he and his son Mark would travel back to their Wolf family reunion in South Dakota.

Mark and Tony were “travel buddies” and occasionally, Tony would join Mark at his classes at Western Oregon University to listen in on lectures. He liked to walk the campus and talk to the “younger crowd”. Tony enjoyed staying active and keeping busy, but most of all he will be remembered for being a people person, all the while staying humble and kind.

Tony passed away on August 23, 2020 in Salem, Oregon at age 89. He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Wolf and 7 siblings. He is survived by his son, Mark Wolf; siblings, Elmer Wolf, Frances Diaz, Sister Teresa Ann Wolf, Rosalita Wolf and Maxine McPherson.

A mass will be held on Friday, August 28, 2020 at 11am at St. Mary Shaw Catholic Church. If you would like to attend the service please call St. Mary Shaw at 503-362-6159 to RSPV due to COVID 19.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Knights of Columbus #8270.
