Daniel Eugene Kress was born June 15, 1945, in Portland, Oregon, to Eugene and Isabel (Williams) Kress. When Daniel was just 8 years old, his dad died unexpectedly, leaving his mother alone with Daniel and his sister. Isabel had a difficult time coping with the loss and she moved often, not allowing much stability for Daniel and his sister. They grew up in the Eugene area, changing schools often, and neither one of them graduated high school because of the constant upheaval. After he quit school, Daniel enlisted in the Marines, but realized after three weeks that was not the direction he wanted to go. He headed back home and found work back in Oregon as a cook at the Branding Iron in Eugene. Daniel met Carolyn Lee Coghlan through his friend’s girlfriend, and the two would eventually marry. During their early years together, they both worked at the cannery and had winters off. They took advantage of the time off before starting a family and spent time travelling around Oregon camping and fishing. After 12 years of marriage, they decided to start a family and raised two sons together. In the late 1980’s, Daniel took a job with Siltec, a silicon wafer manufacturer in Salem, as a polisher on the floor. He worked his way up to operations manager and was able to do some travelling overseas for the company, working there for about 20 years until the company went out of business. Daniel decided to go back to school and attended Chemeketa Community College taking psychology classes. Before finishing his degree, he took a job at the local prison working with the inmates in the drug and alcohol rehabilitation program. Daniel found it fulfilling to help people, and even after he retired, he went to work part time for Helping Hands shelter in Albany and continued his service to others. After a long health battle, Daniel passed away in Albany, Oregon, on April 3, 2021. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Carolyn. Daniel is survived by his wife Carol and his sons Robert and Ronald.
