Obituary for Doreen Edith Hunter

Doreen Edith Hunter was born on February 1, 1937 in Glendale, California at the Glendale Research Hospital to Michael and Doreen (Whitten) Lonergren. She grew up in the Southern California area where she attended and graduated from high school. Doreen was blessed with 3 children, Mia, Michael and Andrew. Later, Doreen attended California State Polytechnic University in Pomona where she earned a B.S. in Police Science. Later she attended the University of Laverne in Laverne California where she earned a Doctorate in Psychology. Doreen became a sworn in police officer for the City of Pasadena. She also worked for the City of Riverside police department as a psychologist. This was work that Doreen was very passionate about. Doreen met her husband, Jeffrey C. Hunter in 1981 and they bonded over their love of dogs, horses and intellectual conversation. They married in Las Vegas, Nevada on November 25, 1983. Together, they owned and operated Pomona Valley Back in Control Inc. which was a resource for families and children going through a difficult time developed by the work of Greg Bodenhamer. They ran this business together for over 6 years until they fully retired and relocated to Scio, Oregon in 1996. Doreen loved the beauty of Oregon and fell in love with Scio where she raised her horses, mini horses, and dogs. All through her life Doreen was a horse lover, it started when she was a young girl who took a simple riding lesson. As an adult, she and Jeffrey would ride and show Tennessee walking horses. Doreen’s horses earned 3 national titles as well as several Northwest championships. She had an incredible eye for picking out talented horses and dogs making many close friendships with other fellow equestrians and dog lovers over the years. Additionally, she raised and showed AKC dogs such as the Chinese Shar Pei, Great Danes, Irish Wolfhounds and French Bulldogs. She was a member of the Lake Mathews, and Santa Ana Valley all breed kennel clubs and the Desert to the Sea Chinese Shar Pei Club in California as well as the Linn County Chintimini Kennel Club in Oregon and over her years of showing and raising dogs garnered 21 AKC champions. Doreen was an animal lover but equally a wonderful wife with strength and intelligence, was a great cook and had a wonderful sense of humor. On March 22, 2019 at age 82 she passed away in Salem, Oregon. She was preceded in death by her son, James Andrew Cookson and her two sisters. She is survived by her husband Jeffrey C. Hunter; daughter, Mia Dancy and son, Michael Rowe; 9 grandchildren and 8 great
