Lyons- Edward Allen Barrett passed away peacefully from natural causes in his cabin overlooking the Little North Fork River on April 7, 2020 at the age of 69. He leavesbehind his sister Melinda of Keizer and brother Kevin of Salem.  Ed was born October 1, 1950 and grew up in the Salem area. As a boy he rode his bike all through the Mission Mill, Pringle Park, downtown and Capitol Mall areas. At age 12his first job was delivering newspapers starting with the Oregon Statesman, Capital Journal and Portland Oregonian. In his later teen years he worked with a Rickreall beekeeper before attending college to study journalism. After college, he worked in construction before heading to Sitka, Alaska seeking adventure and fortune. Returning to Oregon, Ed again worked in construction and was hired by Shiny RockMining Company to live in Jawbone Flats, in the Opal Creek area. It was there that he met his soon to be wife. They located to the San Juan Islands where Ed became the harbormaster in Friday Harbor, Washington.  After their divorce he moved to Whittier, Alaska to accept the harbormaster position which he held for many years. Tiring of the cold and darkness, Ed again returned to the Santiam Canyon area to be  area to be near familyand friends. He lived happily on the Little North Fork writing essays about Oregon life and local history under the byline “My Oregon” for Mill City’s Canyon Weekly newspaper. He often lamented that small town newspaperswere disappearing at an alarming rate as they are so vital to communities.  Ed enjoyed friends, family, writing, playing guitar, listening to classical music, architectural design, local government and small town newspapers. His family and many friends will miss his intellect, humor and great stories.  Please leave condolences and sign the online guestbook and weddle-funeral.com
