Edward Joseph Hughes was born on September 15, 1927 in Brownsville, Oregon to Edward Ross and Bertha Lillian (Weed) Hughes. Edward graduated from Stayton High School and would join the Army Air Force during World War II. Upon his honorable release he would come back to Stayton and marry Dorothy A. Minten on July 17, 1947 and they would raise their family in Stayton. He would build their home of 70 and half years, even remodeling it twice. Edward worked for Mt. Jefferson Lumber/ Freres as a millwright for 22 years. He then began a career with Salem Equipment Inc as a fabricator for 21 years.   In his spare time enjoyed woodworking and gardening; he would make wood cars for his grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and school children for the only charge of a smile. He was also a longtime member of Immaculate Conception Church. Edward passed away on December 4, 2020 in Salem, Oregon at the age of 93. He was preceded in death by his parents and 4 siblings, Calvin Hughes, Helen Burr, Ruby Stayton, Margaret Todd. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Dorothy A. Hughes; children, Linda Maisel, Kathy Hughes (Norman), Steve Hughes (Wanda), Norm Hughes (Cheryl); 6 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, December 19, 2020 at 10am in Immaculate Conception Parish in Stayton. Due to COVID 19 attendance will be limited; however, all are welcome to watch the livestream of the service at the Immaculate Conception Church website. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery in Stayton.
