Obituary for Eugene Henry Calkins

Salem- Eugene Henry Calkins (Gene), age 72, died June 27, 2019 in the care of Salem Hospitals wonderful ICU nurses “Julie” and “Diondra” - surrounded by loving family and friends. Born September 11, 1946 in Mill City, Oregon – to Edward Henry Calkins and Hilda Leona (Upton) Calkins, brother to Joyce (Young). Gene married his High School sweetheart Candice “Candy” Cyphert of Valsetz, OR on February 25, 1966. They had two children: Greg and Jenifer, and enjoyed 40 happy years together – up til July 29, 2006 when Candy died. On July 12, 2007 Gene married Janice (Olmheim) Bryant, friend and next-door-neighbor whom had lost her husband of 30 years on April 20, 2006. He gained a step-daughter, Katherine Bryant.          Gene loved fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, cross country motorcycling, operating heavy equipment and semi-trucks, but not nearly as much as he enjoyed his children, his grandchildren Jake Calkins, Ashley Calkins, and Anthony Burris, and later his great-grandchildren: Hayden Kempfer, and Bentley Kempfer, and step-grandchildren: Emma Collier and Jack Collier. Gene was a man who made friends wherever he went. He was honest and forth right, never sugar-coating the words he spoke. He was a hardworking man whom began his work days at 4:30am in the morning to 10 or 11pm (most often). Being a good provider was his highest priority.  Like his father before him, he became an admired and respected Lumber Contractor and at the end of that career employed 30 able-bodied men, and prided himself that no man incurred a life threatening injury or death on his watch. When environmentalists changed the industry he took on new adventures: becoming a long-haul truck driver, then owner/manager of the Keizer, OR “Rent-to-Own store”. He later returned to the vicinity of his youth and worked as the Production Supervisor/Lead at Decorative Bark in Lyons, OR. He retired in 2008.As per his wishes, no service/memorial will be held. He was well loved and will be missed by all.
