Obituary for George Arthur Atiyeh

Lyons- George Arthur Atiyeh was born April 16, 1948, in Portland, Oregon, to Richard and Mary-Allice (Blocklinger) Atiyeh. He was raised in the Portland area, and spent his summers at Opal Creek. He knew at a young age that this was a special place and would want to remain close to it for the rest of his life. He graduated from Beaverton High School before going into the Army Reserves. George took classes, and traveled until he moved to the Opal Creek area.

George worked for Shiny Rock Mining Company for a time and then ventured out on his own and started several businesses. Over the years he ran a flying service, a computer business, and a construction company, all while actively and passionately working in conservation. After many years of hard work and lobbying, he helped preserve and create the Opal Creek Wilderness area. Some of his other hobbies included flying, white water rafting, and traveling.

George was preceded in death by his parents Richard and Mary-Alice Atiyeh. He is survived by his children Aziz (Karissa) Atiyeh, Arin (Mandi) Atiyeh, Aniese (Bradley) Mitchell, Rachel (Chris) Atiyeh Blackelk, and Sara Atiyeh; nine grandchildren; sisters Mary-Winn (Tom) Marantette and Catherine (Bruce) Atiyeh-Mitchell; and numerous nieces and nephews.
