George "Vince" Johnson

George Robert, “Vince”, Johnson was born on June 1, 1928 in Spokane, Washington to George M. and Myrtle Johnson. While attending high school, George volunteered for the Navy and served in WWII on a destroyer. After the war ended, he went back to high school and got his diploma. He then briefly attended WSU, choosing instead, to volunteer for the Korean War. After the War, George began his long time career in advertising. One of the most prolific parts of his career was with the innovation and design for French fry ads and commercials; McDonald’s being one of his biggest clients. George would work with food stylists and designers to create revolutionary ads as we see them today. It was during his professional years where he earned the nickname “Vince” like the artist Vincent van Gogh for his energetic work style. In addition, he would write articles for local newspapers with subjects that covered political issues and current events. Later on in life he eventually took a collection of his essays and published them in a book which he titled “Reality Crackers”. Besides his love of design and writing, George created Bonsai trees and enjoyed woodworking. He married Barbara Jackson on March 1, 2000 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Stayton. The two enjoyed the last 18 years together living in Mill City, Lincoln City and Aumsville. They were members of Stayton United Methodist Church. George passed away on November 23, 2018 at age 90, being a member of “The Greatest Generation”. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; his sons, Rod and Jeff in addition to his stepchildren, Andy and Ginger, 3 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. A memorial service, with military honors, will be held at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon January 25, 2019 at 12pm. Arrangements entrusted to Weddle-funeral.com
