Obituary for Jack Ernest Mathis

Silverton-Jackie “Jack” Ernest Mathis was born in June 7, 1945 in Flag Pond, Tennessee to William and Florence (Metcalf) Mathis. Due to having to work to support the family, he was unable to graduate from high school but like many young men during that time we would end up going into the military.  His military experience would see him serving in Vietnam, before being honorably discharged. 

After being discharged, Jack would work for himself at different business that he owned over the years. While working at the corner store he owned, he would get the occasional visit from Jodella Downs.  The two got to talking which let to dating and on January 1, 1990 they would be married in Woodburn, Oregon. 

Ultimately go to work for Tri-met driving a bus.  He would work for Tri-met for many years but would eventually go to school to get his certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant before retiring. 

In his spare time Jack enjoyed gardening.  He always made sure that the house was looking beautiful with a variety of plants and flowers.  He also enjoyed cooking and would marvel his family with the different dishes that he would create.  When he had some extended time off, he would go traveling with his family.  Whether it was a spontaneous or planned trip, it was always and adventure. Many times though the trip would end up at the beach, as that was always a favorite spot to frequent. 

On July 4, 2020 Jack passed away in Silverton, Oregon surrounded by family.  He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Florence; Child, Jack Jr., and four siblings. He is survived by his loving wife, Jodella; Children, Rhonda Mathis, William Moises, Brian Moises and Bonnie Mathis; 1 Grandchild; 2 Great-Grandchildren and 4 siblings.
