James Edward Andrews was born in Hollywood, California, on the unique date of December 3, 1945, unique because when written out in the typical number format for dates, it is 1-2-3-4-5. He was the first of four sons of Bernard and Virginia Andrews. He attended school in Phoenix, Arizona, and Medford, Oregon, until graduating from Medford High in 1964. He continued his studies at Biola University but, desiring to leave his studies for a time, left college after one semester and joined the Navy. He was honorably discharged as a First-Class Petty Officer after four years of active duty. Referring to the four-point classification used in the Navy, his superiors referred to him as a “four-point sailor”. While in the Navy, he was introduced to Laurie Miller through family members and they began to build their relationship through correspondence. A year after leaving the Navy, Jim and Laurie were married in Santa Susanna, California. Shortly thereafter they moved to Klamath Falls, Oregon, where Jim enrolled in Oregon Institute of Technology’s land surveying program. After graduation in 1973, Jim worked for surveying companies in various locations in Oregon and Washington, gaining experience so that he could open his own land surveying company. This was accomplished in the early 80s. Over the years he pursued this career in Oregon, Washington, Arizona, and Colorado with the final years centered in Mill City, Oregon. What defined Jim’s life was not his career, but rather that he was a disciple of Jesus Christ. By God’s kindness he was born again as a child of God around the age of seven. The reality of his faith was demonstrated by his service in the local church, by his faithfulness to his wife over the 50 years of their marriage, by his care in raising his children in the knowledge of God, and by the integrity he demonstrated in his business and personal life. Jim passed into the arms of his Lord at the age of 74 on October 6, 2020, the victim of bone cancer. He is survived by his wife Laurie; his two children, Ginger and Brian; six grandchildren; and three brothers. Jim will be laid to rest at Fairview Cemetery in Gates with private graveside service and military honors.
