Lester, “Johnny” to his family and friends, was born in Centerville, Iowa, to Lester Sr. and Floy Haines. After high school, he enlisted in the Air Force and served in England during the Korean War. While stationed at Manston AFB, he was in the medic unit and worked at the hospital, where he met his future bride, Brenda. They were married on Valentine’s Day in 1952, and went on to have five children and 66 years together. He worked in newspaper and magazine advertising most of his career, finally settling in Oregon about 22 years ago when he retired, to live closer to the kids and grandkids. Johnny was a race car driver in his younger years, and he followed the sport his whole life. He also enjoyed photography, golf, reading, and was brilliant at troubleshooting. Johnny is survived by his wife Brenda; sister Mary Helen (Ray) Tandeski; children Steve (Lesley) Haines, Graham (Melanie) Haines, Greg Haines, Donna (Michael) Worley, Kim (Joseph) Gumpinger; grandchildren Taylor, Gwynn, Erin, Sarah, Cameron, Lynn, and Kekai; and great-grandchildren Madison, Sydney, Silas, Kaia, Noah, and Wesley. The family will celebrate his life with a private gathering over Thanksgiving weekend.
