Obituary for May Louise Cole

A service will be held for May Louise Cole on Saturday, February 2nd, 2019 at 1:00 o’clock at Weddle Funeral Service. Viewing will be held prior to the service from 11:00am to 12:30pm with burial at Lone Oak Cemetery to follow the service.

May was born on May 18, 1928 in Flasher, North Dakota to Egil Albertson Haugen and Edith M. (Weisser) Haugen. Growing up in North Dakota, May was brought up on the family farm with her older brother Elmer (Deceased) and two younger sisters Helen and Florence (Deceased).

In her junior year of high school, her family bought a farm in Washington on Puget Island.

She met her husband, Leland Otto Cole while working at Lower Columbia Dairgold. Leland was a delivery driver and May worked in the office as a book keeper. Later, May attended nursing school, she began a career with Columbia Hospital, until they moved to McMinnville, Oregon and then Salem Hospital where she retired in 1993 as a surgical scheduler.

In addition to being a career woman, she valued her position as a mother.

She was blessed with four children, Donna, Debra, David(Deceased) and Douglas.

May would make all of her children clothing for recitals and special occasions. Every time they had a recital she would ensure that she made them brand new outfits.She was an amazing seamstress. She also did quilting, knitting and crocheting.

May ensured her family had fresh food from her garden. She would can her own fruits and vegetables also making her own jams.

She was a dedicated and faithful long time member of First Christian Church and Garden Road Christian Church.

She and Leland would enjoy traditional hymns like “Amazing Grace” or “In the Garden”. She loved listening to the music, was a fan of Lawrence Welk and Daniel O’ Donnell. Additionally, May had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed comedians like Tim Conway and Carol Burnett.

Throughout her life she stayed tenacious, passionate and most of all- loving to the projects and people she was involved with. May passed away peacefully at age 90 on January 13, 2019 in Salem, Oregon. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made in her name to First Christian Church in Salem, Oregon or Willamette Valley Hospice for the wonderful support they gave May.
