Born October 31st, 1939 in Salem, Oregon, went to grade school in Keizer and graduated from North Salem High School.  Mel joined the Navy right out of high school in 1958.  Mel married Dolores Abbey on November 10th, 1961.  He was honorably discharged in 1963.  He purchased his home in 1963 too. Along with all of those milestones, Mel started to work for the State of Oregon for General services in the printing plant, Mel and Dolores had two children together Angela (Bill) Roush (Keizer) and Jason (Patty) Hasche (Salem).  Mel and Dolores separated later in life and Mel met and married Judy on December 31st, 1986, which gave Mel additional children, Kim (Drew) Keech (Castle Rock, CO), Eric (Saundra) Neperud (Bath, ME), Gary (Amy) Neperud (Albany, OR), Karen (Gerald) Hunter (Hubbard, OR). Mel has 19 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.  Mel retired from the State of Oregon in 1990, prior to Mel’s retirement he was a major contributor to planning the underground parking structure in downtown Salem.  He enjoyed wood working, hunting, fishing and crabbing.  He was a charter member of the Stayton Moose lodge and a member of the Elks lodge in Salem. What Mel loved the most is his family and friends (by the way if you ever met Mel you were known as family at that moment).  He thrived on getting together with family and friends for any celebration or crabbing/fishing trip.  Mel passed away on April 1st, he is now catching the forever “monsterous fish”, the family invites all who would like to attend to his celebration of life on April 27th at 2:00 in Stayton at Weddle Funeral Service.  Donations can be made to the charity of your choice or to the Union Gospel Mission or the Salvation Army.
