Obituary for Mikael Bruce Pickett

W7WVC, Mikael “Mike” Bruce Pickett was born on June 1, 1941 in Washington to Mildred. Mike was the middle son of 4 sisters. Right out of high school Mike joined the navy and served during The Vietnam War. He loved his country and was subsequently honorably discharged. After leaving the service, Mike traveled the US on his motorcycle and was able to see and experience many amazing places. He came back home to Oregon, where he worked as an independent logger for many years. After logging, Mike owned an electronics’ shop in Scio, Oregon mostly doing repairs.

Mike has lived in Scio, Oregon for the last 40 years. In 2015, Mike met Sarah McDonald while playing in a billiards league and on February 8, 2021 they were married at home. Mike welcomed her and her son into his life as if they were always meant to be there. Mike loved working with his hands. He taught his nephew Bob Groger about motorcycles and so much more. He also taught Koty all he could about being a man, taking care of his family, and working with his hands. Mike’s hobbies include HAM (CB) radio, billiards, guns, and motorcycles. Mike was a HAM (CB) radio operator for 70 years. Most recently his closest friends were KF7A2I Jim and Evelyn Evans, who have been the primary support system for him and Sarah, and N7EGB Duncan Tucker.

On February 27, 2021 Mikael Bruce Pickett passed away at home with his family. Mike was preceded in death by 2 sisters, his mom, and his favorite uncles. He is survived by his wife: Sarah McDonald, 2 of his sisters: Melanie “Suzy” and Shelia, his son: Jay Pickett, and Sarah’s son Koty McDonald, whom he considered his own. Mike was an honest, hard-working man, who loved his family and friends. Mike may have kept to himself, but he deeply cared for the people whom he took under his wing. He would have given the shirt off his back for anyone he was close to that needed it. Mike will be missed by those who lives were enriched by his presence.

YMO, your wife.

RIP Mike 73 OM
