Obituary for Reducindo Red Chavez

Born to Gertrude and Maximo in Chaperito, New Mexico on March 3, 1923. Red Chavez grew up on his family’s farm where he helped raise livestock, plant and harvest corn and beans. He went into the Army Air Corps in 1944 where he was an infantryman and worked on airplanes. Red was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Good Conduct Medal as well as the Purple Heart Medal. After his time in the service Red met Marystella at a dance club, Red was an amazing dancer and enjoyed it very much. They married on April 18, 1949 in Las Vegas, New Mexico and started their family. Red and Marystella were married for 63 years until her passing in 2011. Red worked as a printer and was a member of the loyal order of Moose for 28 years and the American Legion for 63 years. He was also an active member at his church in California Our Lady of the Sierra and served on the church board. Red moved to Oregon 11 years ago to be closer to family. He was a diehard 49’s and Giants fan, loved to RV travel but most of all time with family was most important. When his kids were younger he was their little league coach and Cub Scout leader for 10 years. Family was the most important thing in his life, Red will be remembered for his kind heart, as anyone who knew him loved him. Red passed away at the Lebanon Veteran’s Home on March 23, 2018 in Lebanon, Oregon. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, March 31, 2018 at Weddle Funeral Service in Stayton, Oregon. Red is preceded in death by his wife Marystella and a son Richard Chavez. He is survived by his children Hazel (Ken) Eckhardt, Jacob (Elpida) Chavez, Edwin Chavez and Sharon King, Thomas Chavez and Stephanie Worthington; 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made in Red’s name to or Moose Charities. Weddle Funeral Services entrusted with arrangements.
