Robert Roy Mundt was born on July 20, 1921 in Dupree, South Dakota to Roy H. Mundt and Katherine Stroh.  At a young age the family moved to Mill City, Oregon where he graduated from Santiam High School. After graduating he attended trade school in Weiser Idaho where he gained his certification as a pipe fitter. Robert’s pre-war education led him the Portland Shipyards to work as a marine pipefitter.   On August 21, 1942 at the age of 21 and while the country was stepping up their involvement in World War II Robert entered the United States Army as a Private First Class.  He would soon be sent overseas to Africa where he would manage supplies sent forward for the war effort.  Because of his talents, Robert achieved the position overseeing the entire region of supply warehouses and was promoted to the rank of Technical Sergeant in the Quarter Master Corps.  It was while serving in Africa that he met Mary Alexander Petrovits of Alexandria Egypt who was living with her parents there.  The two hit it off and would Marry on March 31, 1946 in Cairo, Eqypt.  This union would give birth to a strong legacy; two sons, Fred and Steve and many grand and great-grandchildren.  Robert would continue serving for a few more months before being honorably discharged on December 30, 1946. After being discharged, the two would move to Mill City where he utilized his training to go to work for the city Water Department installing pipelines underground, supplying water to residential and businesses. His duties also included water purification testing for Mill City. At the time of his retirement "There is not too many underground water pipes my hands haven't touched in Mill City".  After about 10 years the family would move to Albany, Oregon where he would live until 2007.  Robert was hired by Mountain States, which later became Pacific Power and Light Company, where he would go on to work for their Albany plant for almost 35 years; finally retiring in 1983 as a Forman.  In his spare time Robert enjoyed photography, woodworking hunting and fishing.  He was an avid trout fisherman and was known for his unique way he stored his fish.  Robert also enjoyed traveling.  He was able to travel to many locations overseas but going to Greece, the “Holy Lands” and back to Egypt were very memorable trips.  On May 1, 2019 Robert passed away in Salem, Oregon.  He was preceded in death by his loving wife Mary; parents, Roy and Katherine; and sisters Phyllis and Cleo.  He is survived by his children, Fred (Jill) Mundt, Steven (Charlene) Mundt; sister Mavis (Bob) Crass; step-brother Jim (Carolee) Brown; Sister in law, Paula Frizzell; Nephews, Alex and Richard Frizzell, Lee and Kevin Crass and Terry Olson; Grandchildren, Cari Boyd, Kelly Kenline, Aaron Mundt, Adam Mundt, Andrea Jincks, Traci (Brandon) Clarke, Ryan (KaRin) Johnson and 9 Great-Grand Children. A graveside service will be at Fairview Cemetery in Gates, Oregon on Saturday May 11 at 11 AM followed by a reception at Weddle Funeral Service in Stayton, Oregon.
