Born August 29, 1969 in Camp Zama Army Hospital, Japan to Barbara and Gary Bates, Scott Kenton Bates died at home in Aumsville on August 20, 2011 after courageously fighting a brain tumor for nearly two years.  Scott was surrounded by numerous family members as he was received by the Lord. Scott is survived by his mother Barbara Bates, grandparents Clearance and Audrey Scott, sister Becky Bates, brother John Bates (Dana), and sister Jennifer Christian (Kris).  Scott had no children of his own but enjoyed spoiling his nephews and niece, Devon, Jackson, and Garrison Christian, and Ryan and Alexandra Bates.  Scott is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins who will miss him dearly. Scott is preceded in death by his father Gary Bates and grandparents N.K. and Charlotte Bates, all of Aumsville. Scott graduated from Cascade High School in 1988 and attended Chemeketa Community College and Southern Oregon State College.  He loved the Ashland area and lived there for several years, enjoying its climate and culture, as well as camaraderie with kindred spirits he met in Southern Oregon.  As a testament to his passion for literature, Scott served others through employment in book sales, most recently for Borders Books of Salem, but also for independent book stores in Ashland.  Scott could recommend a good read to suit anyone’s tastes and was known for giving literature as thoughtful and personal gifts. A memorial service for Scott will be held at Calvary Lutheran Church in Stayton at 2:00 on Saturday, September 3rd.  Contributions in Scott’s name can be made to the Cascade School District to purchase children’s literature for the collections at the schools’ libraries. Arrangements entrusted to Weddle Funeral Services Stayton, OR.
