Charles Richard Clarkson, born January 22, 1945, in Roanoke, Virginia, to Eunice Vivian Horne and Charles Elmer Clarkson, lived a life marked by service, creativity, and a deep appreciation for the natural world. His family later made their home in Stayton, Oregon, where Charles grew up and graduated from Stayton High School in 1963. He went on to attend Oregon State University until 1965, carrying with him a lifelong love of learning and exploration. As a young man, Charles found purpose and discipline in the Boy Scouts, ultimately earning the rank of Eagle Scout, an achievement that reflected his determination, integrity, and commitment to personal growth. After his education, he answered the call to serve his country. From February 1966 to April 1968, Charles served in the United States Navy as a Hospital Corpsman.
Life brought Charles and Ruth Pederson together, and on June 14, 1975, they were married in the serene beauty of Deepwood Park in Salem, Oregon. Their marriage became the foundation of a life filled with partnership, devotion, and shared joy.
Professionally, Charles worked as a graphic artist, a field that allowed him to blend technical skill with his natural creativity. Outside of his career, Charles was happiest outdoors. He enjoyed camping, hiking, photography, and especially gardening. His passion for horticulture led him to become a Master Gardener, and he dedicated nearly 15 years to the Master Gardener Program.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents and by his younger brother, Darrell Clarkson. He is survived by his brother Ronald Clarkson; his son, Braden Aaron Clarkson; and his beloved wife, Ruth Clarkson, who remained the heart of his world.
Charles will be remembered for his gentle spirit, his creativity, his service to others, and the quiet, steady kindness he offered to everyone around him. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the gardens he tended, and the many lives he touched along the way.
