Edwin Holt Stuart, 75, passed away peacefully on September 26, 2018 at the Edward F. Tokarski Home in Salem, OR with his loving companion, Linda Horton, by his side. Ed was born on August 10, 1943 in Oneida, NY, the fourth child and first son of Edwin A. Stuart, Jr. and Josephine Holt Stuart. He grew up in West Winfield, NY where he graduated from high school in 1961. He received his bachelor’s degree from St. Lawrence University in 1965 and did graduate work in philosophy at Wayne State University. From the time he was a little child, Ed loved music and reportedly could be heard singing in his crib after waking up in the morning. He became an excellent trumpet player in high school, a gift that he as well as many others enjoyed over the years he played. Although he focused much more on music than on athletics during that period in his life, Ed was also a competitive high jumper in high school. When Ed became interested in an idea or activity, he became truly immersed in it. While living in Detroit in the 1970’s, he became an avid runner, competing in marathons and training up to 30 miles every Saturday with a friend. Later in life, hiking and walking replaced his running as a daily activity. Ed climbed South Sister mountain in Oregon as well as many other trails of Eugene and Salem, often with one of his faithful canine companions. Ed began working for the US Postal Service in the 1980’s and remained with the postal service for many years, working in both Indiana and Oregon before his retirement. Ed’s avocation as an “astrological philosopher” was a more significant part of his life than his “day job”. He had studied philosophy for many years and began blending that interest with the study of astrology as time went on. He wrote many articles over the years that were published in journals such as The Mountain Astrologer, some of which were compiled into a book, Thirty Years in the 12th House. Ed wrote and published several other autobiographical and astrological books through the course of in his life. He knew that he often looked at the world through a different lens than others and writing was a means he consistently used to clarify and explain his ideas. Ed is survived by his long-time companion, Linda Horton of Salem, OR and his son, Dean Stuart, of Oakland, CA who was the light of his life. He is also survived by his siblings, Anne Stuart Kantor of West Winfield, NY; Susan Stuart Harvey (Dennis) of Charlotte, NC; and William Stuart of Charlotte, NC. as well as several cousins and many nieces and nephews. Long-time friends who survive him include his former wife, Paula Stuart, of Salem; Helen and Kevin Reilly of Taos, NM; and Richard Amaro of Petaluma, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents and two siblings, Mary Stuart Leonard and Caroline Stuart Stuck. Final arrangements are being managed by Weddle Funeral Services of Stayton, OR.
