Gene Douglas Schilling Profile Photo

Gene D. Schilling, born 1942 as the youngest of four to Art and Margaret Schilling, was a lifelong resident of Sherman County, leaving only briefly for school, military service or work. He always came home. His ancestors homesteaded in Sherman County, beginning a long family history of wheat farming, which would shape Gene’s life. By trade, Gene was a mechanic, but he also enjoyed collecting hats and coins and driving fast cars. He was a vast resource for genealogy and local historical photos and would share his knowledge and a laugh over a cup of coffee. He loved all sports, football being his favorite. He spent many years walking on the sideline of Sherman High School football games. Most years he also spent volunteering, showing up as needed to suppress fires, as a reserve deputy, mounted search and rescue, driving the ambulance and even to don a certain red suit in December. He could make most any child grin. His easy nature, sense of humor and arsenal of knowledge will be missed. He leaves behind family, lifelong friends and an empty chair for morning coffee.
