James Donald
Gilbertson
April 3, 1952 – April 14, 2026
James Donald Gilbertson, born April 3, 1952, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Rosemarie Czekalski and Richard Gilbertson, lived a life shaped by service, craftsmanship, and devotion to family. Raised in Southern California, Jim grew into a man who valued hard work, curiosity, and connection. He pursued a career in nursing, graduating from San Bernardino Valley College with his Associate Degree in Nursing in 1996.
Before becoming a nurse, Jim proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1973 to 1977. His years in the military instilled in him a sense of discipline, loyalty, and purpose that stayed with him throughout his life.
In June of 1996, Jim met Melissa, and their lives changed forever. They fell deeply in love and began the joyful process of blending their families and building a future together. On November 6, 1999, they were married in an intimate ceremony in Las Vegas, surrounded by their children and parents. They later celebrated with a large reception at the Old Spaghetti Factory, the site of their very first date, sharing their happiness with extended family and friends.
After retiring, Jim and Melissa made their home in Oregon, where they embraced a quieter pace of life. Jim was a man of many talents: a dedicated nurse, a skilled neon sign maker, and an artist who found joy in stained glass. He loved the outdoors and could often be found fishing, golfing, or camping, savoring the simple pleasures that brought him peace.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Rose and Richard. He is survived by his loving wife, Melissa; his children Shannon, John, and Syrina; and his grandchildren Ciaus, Mia, and Grayson, who brought him endless pride and delight. He also leaves behind his siblings Corrine, Frank, and Scott.
Later this year, Jim's family will gather for an intimate memorial tree planting at his eldest daughter's home in Hawaii. Jim will be remembered for his gentle spirit, his craftsmanship, his devotion to family, and the love he poured into every chapter of his life.
