James Donald Smith passed away on August 16, 2025 in Mill City, Oregon, where he had lived for the past 35 years. He was 83 years old.Born on December 24, 1941, in Los Angeles, California, James was the son of Norma Steadman and James Francis Smith. After graduating high school, he attended Pierce Community College before beginning a career as a carpenter and general contractor. He worked in California for 45 years, building a reputation for reliability and craftsmanship.
In Los Angeles, James met Diana Weinstein, and they were married on July 7, 1973. Together, they raised a family and shared a life grounded in commitment and care. After leaving California, James and Diana spent three years in Las Vegas before settling in Oregon.
James had a lifelong interest in the outdoors and hands-on hobbies. He enjoyed rock hounding, gold mining, woodworking, and lapidary work. These pursuits reflected his appreciation for nature and his skill with tools and materials.
He is survived by his wife Diana; his children Michael Grade, Jason (Alisha), Timothy (Sharon), and Sean (Julie); and his brother Charles Glenn Smith. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Justice, Julecia, Brandon, Ethan, Willow, Rosie, Skyler, Irie, Ollie, Elijah, and Isaiah.
James was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Michael, and his son Matthew.
He will be remembered by his family and friends for his steady presence, his dedication to his work and hobbies, and the life he built with those he loved.
