Jason John Elsey, lovingly known as “JJ,” passed away on August 23, 2025, at the age of 52. He was born on November 11, 1972, in Portland, Oregon, to Danny Elsey and Susan Haider.

Jason was a devoted father to his daughter, Rilea Smith, with whom he shared a deep and special bond. Rilea was truly his “daddy’s girl,” and no matter what struggles he faced in life, he always made time to call her, visit her, and remind her of his love. Jason also cared deeply for his stepson, Taylor Marshall, who was an important part of his family. His joy multiplied in the role of grandfather to Chloe (8), Paisley (4), and Lillie (9 months), who brought light to his later years.

Jason is survived by his daughter Rilea, stepson Taylor, grandchildren Chloe, Paisley, and Lillie, his mother Susan Haider, stepfather Riad Haider, stepmother Anita Elsey, and his brother Ryan Haider, whom Jason helped to raise. He was preceded in death by his father, Danny Elsey, and his brother, Micah Elsey.

Jason was a man of many passions. He found solace in the works of author W.E.B. Griffin, the guitar mastery of Joe Satriani and Stevie Ray Vaughan, and the comfort of lifelong friendships especially with his dearest friend, Cheri Allen. He loved visiting Bend, Oregon, where his father lived, and treasured the moments of peace those trips brought him. Above all, he cherished time spent with Rilea, which was the heart of his life.

Though Jason faced lifelong struggles with addiction and homelessness, he never allowed those hardships to diminish his love for his family. His enduring commitment to his daughter and grandchildren stands as a testament to his resilience and the depth of his heart.

Jason will be remembered for his love, his laughter, and the ways he showed up for those closest to him, even in difficult times. His family and friends will miss him deeply but find comfort in knowing he is now at peace.
