Obituary

Laura Jo Hazel, born December 21, 1951, in Eugene, Oregon, passed away on July 22, 2026. The daughter of Jessie Gladys Porter and John E. Taylor, Laura grew up in Springfield with a bright, curious spirit and a deep appreciation for learning, creativity, and the world around her. Laura graduated from high school and went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Art Education from the University of Oregon.

In 1974, Laura married Michael Hazel, the love and partner with whom she would share more than five decades of devotion, laughter, and family life. Together they raised two sons, Brent and Christopher, who remained the center of her world.

In 1980 came a move to Salem. For several years Laura operated a child day care business, pouring patience, creativity and care into the children she served. Then she decided to go back to school, and earned a Master’s degree in Special Education from Western Oregon University. Her education reflected her lifelong passion for teaching, nurturing, and helping others discover their own strengths.

Laura then began her career as a elementary teacher for special needs children with the Salem-Keizer School District. She was known for her compassion, her steady encouragement, and her ability to see the unique potential in every student. Her work touched countless lives, leaving a legacy of kindness and dedication that extended far beyond the classroom. She served in this capacity for thirteen years before her retirement.

In 2005, Laura and Michael settled in Stayton area. This fulfilled their goal of living on a country property on which to build a dream home.

Throughout her life she enjoyed outdoor activities, particularly with family. Hiking, camping, and backpacking were regular summer activities until it became too difficult. Then it was trailer camping and roadtrips after that.
