Lawrence Alexander Coffey, a lifelong resident of the Stayton-Aumsville area, passed away on July 3, 2025 in Stayton, Oregon. Lawrence was born in Salem, Oregon, on August 21, 1940, to Cleo Vera Amort and Thornton Edward Coffey Sr.

He graduated from Cascade High School, where he stood out as a football player and wrestler, earning a full athletic scholarship to Oregon Institute of Technology. His accomplishments on the field and in competition were a source of pride. He was a recognized force as a middle linebacker.

In July of 1963, Lawrence married Karen Lee Earnest in Salem. They shared a long and loving marriage filled with family, laughter, and steady dedication. He worked for Duraflake in Albany for 35 years, retiring as a jitney driver and dock and warehouse foreman. Outside of work, Lawrence volunteered with the Stayton and Aumsville fire departments, giving back to the community he called home.

Lawrence loved being outdoors hunting, fishing, and spending time with his grandsons. He enjoyed sharing meals with family and had a particular talent for cooking pork chops, earning him the affectionate nickname “Grandpa Pork Chop.” After Karen’s passing, his grandchildren became the center of his world, and he took great joy in being part of their lives.

He is survived by his siblings, Thornton Coffey Jr., Claudette Coffey, and Diane French; his children, Kenton Coffey (Shelly) and Janell Snyder (Bryan); his grandchildren, Morgan Coffey (Kayla), Garrett Coffey (Stephanie), and Ethan Coffey; and his great-grandchildren, Reed, Harper, and Tanner Coffey.

Lawrence will be remembered for his love of family, his sense of humor, and his deep ties to his community.
