Loretta Sue Hersha August 7, 1936 – July 30, 2025
Loretta Sue Hersha was born on August 7, 1936, in Oklahoma to William and Naomi Williams. One of nine siblings, Loretta spent her childhood in Dayton, Oregon, where she would later meet the love of her life, Irvin Lane Hersha, Sr.
A proud graduate of Dayton High School, Class of 1954, Loretta married Irvin on June 11, 1955, in Reno, Nevada. The couple made their home in Wheatland and Hopewell before settling in Salem in 1992.
Loretta was, above all, a devoted mother. She did whatever it took to be home with her children during the day, often working nights or picking up odd jobs to help support the family. Her home was always warm and welcoming, frequently serving as a safe haven for children in need of love, comfort, and a good meal.
As a grandmother, Loretta gave herself wholeheartedly to her grandchildren, sharing sweet treats, snuggles, and unconditional love. Her compassion extended to animals as well; her beloved dogs were famously spoiled with affection and goodies.
In retirement, Loretta and Irvin found fulfillment in volunteering at the South Salem Senior Center, where they were honored together as Volunteers of the Year. They lived in Salem from 1992 until 2020, when they joined the Marion Estates at McKillop Residence community.
Loretta is survived by her children: Dennis D. Hersha, Denise J. Schell, Diana L. Palmer, and Irvin L. Hersha, Jr.; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; five sisters; and three brothers. She was preceded in death by her much-loved husband, Irvin Hersha, Sr.
Loretta passed away peacefully on July 30, 2025, in Sublimity, Oregon. A celebration of life will be held at Hopewell Cemetery located at 21600 SE Church Rd. Dayton, OR on Wednesday, August 20, 2025 at 10:30 A.M.
