Lorraine was born on February 18, 1924 in Piedmont Missouri to Harry and Edith (Penn) Clark. During World War II she joined the United States Marine Corps and was a parts runner at a Navel yard in Oklahoma. She was later stationed in El Turro where she would marry her first husband; they would have two children, James and Nancy. After getting honorably discharged from the Marine Corps, she received a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from Oregon State University in education. Throughout her life Lorraine enjoyed teaching and with a friend started Pioneer Pacific Business School. She also taught at Mt. Hood Community College and OSU. She later married Donald M. Sutherland and he preceded her in death. Lorraine enjoyed hiking and reading. She passed away on June 27, 2018 in Sublimity, Oregon after a long illness. She is preceded in death by a son, Thomas and is survived by her son, James Gilliland of Oregon and daughter, Nancy Gilliland of Washington; sister, Betty Clark of Missouri and one granddaughter Erica Gilliland of New Zealand.
