Mark Higley, a cherished father, grandfather, veteran, and friend, passed away, leaving behind a profound legacy of kindness, hard work, and quiet generosity.
Born on February 12, 1931, in Grand Junction, Colorado, Mark was the son of Lucy May Johnson and Paul Hershel Higley. As one of eight children, he grew up embodying the values of family, perseverance, and a commitment to helping others.
A proud veteran, Mark served in the United States Air Force from 1950 to 1955. Following his military service, he embarked on a longstanding career as a switchman for the Southern Pacific Railroad, where he demonstrated his reliability and strong work ethic.
In his leisure time, Mark found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved gardening and landscaping, often spending peaceful moments observing birds. He also cherished antiquing and hunting for treasures at garage sales. An enthusiastic handyman, Mark dedicated much of his time to home improvement projects and vehicle repairs, always ready to lend a helping hand. He also enjoyed country western music, playing the guitar and in his younger years dancing the jitterbug with his wife. Above all, he valued sharing meals with family and friends, treasuring the time spent together.
Mark is survived by his son Randy Higley; his daughter-in-law, Valerie Higley; and his five grandchildren, April Tubbs, Bryan Higley, Kyle Higley, April Barnes, and Amanda Barnes. He is also survived by 14 great-grandchildren. He was still involved in their lives at 94, attending their sports games and school events. Each of them brought immense joy and pride to his life. He was preceded in death by his son Greg, his wife Ella, and his parents.
Mark will be remembered most for his generosity. He was a man who would stop to assist anyone in need, always willing to offer his time, skills, or compassion. He was a devoted Christian, husband and father he loved The Lord Jesus, read his Bible every night. He would often talk about stories from the Bible and The Lord.
