Melissa Claire
Shadwick
December 2, 1954 – April 11, 2026
Melissa Claire Shadwick, born December 2, 1954, in Alameda, California, to Bertha and Miles Henselman, lived a life shaped by compassion, quiet strength, and a deep devotion to the people and animals she loved. She grew up in California before moving to Oregon, where she graduated high school and later attended Oregon State University, majoring in physical education.
Melissa met Guy Shadwick, the love of her life, and the two were married on February 19, 1993, in Corvallis, Oregon. Professionally, Melissa worked as a customer service representative and property manager, roles in which her patience, kindness, and natural ability to connect with others shone brightly.
Outside of work, Melissa's heart found its greatest expression in her love for animals. She volunteered with Safe Haven, dedicating countless hours to helping vulnerable animals find safety and comfort. At home, she cared for many stray cats who came to rely on her gentle presence and dependable kindness.
Melissa is survived by her sister Marla Ragsdale; her husband Guy Shadwick; her children Cheri Shadwick-Amoitte, Chris Hirata, and Andrew Hirata; and her grandchildren Kane Amiotte, Jade Amiotte, and Elijah Hirata, each of whom brought immense joy and pride into her life. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Miles, whose memories she carried with her always.
Melissa passed peacefully, surrounded by the love of her family. Her presence will be deeply missed, but her memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
In accordance with her wishes, there will be no funeral or formal service. The family kindly asks for privacy as they grieve together and welcome her home following her cremation. Information regarding opportunities for close friends and family to pay their respects will be shared at a later time.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Melissa's honor to Albany Safe Haven, a place that reflects her lifelong compassion and the values she held dear.
