Obituary

Melissa Elaine Taylor, born May 4, 1964, in Salem, Oregon, to James Lyons and Kathey (Schotthoefer) Lyons, lived a life defined by quiet strength, steadfast love, and a deep commitment to the people she cherished. Raised in the Willamette Valley, Melissa grew up surrounded by a large and close-knit family whose bonds shaped her throughout her life.

On June 16, 2001, Melissa married Brian Taylor in Jefferson, Oregon, beginning a partnership built on loyalty, shared purpose, and the comfort of knowing they would face life’s joys and challenges side by side. Together they raised their children, Mariah and Eden, with patience, humor, and unwavering support.

Professionally, Melissa found her calling as an instructional assistant at Cascade Junior High, where she became known for her dedication, reliability, and the genuine care she showed her students. Her co‑workers recognized her hard work and the quiet but meaningful impact she made each day. Melissa approached her role with humility and heart, always striving to make school a better place for the young people she served.

Outside of work, Melissa embraced creativity and simple joys. She loved sewing and drawing, finding peace and expression in the things she made with her hands. But nothing brought her greater happiness than time spent with her beloved grandson, Declan. He was the light of her life, and she treasured every moment with him.

Melissa is preceded in death by her father, James Lyons, as well as Albert Lyons, Mildred Lyons, Max Schotthoefer, Douglas Schotthoefer, Ted Schotthoefer, Richard Schotthoefer, and Gertrude Schotthoefer, whose memories remained close to her heart.

She is survived by her mother, Kathy Lyons; her siblings Kim, Greg, Jill, Jerra, Ryan, and Debbie; her husband, Brian Taylor; her children Mariah Taylor and Eden Taylor; and her cherished grandson, Declan Taylor, who will carry her love forward into the years ahead.

Melissa’s life was one of devotion; to her family, her work, her faith, and the quiet joys that made her days meaningful. She will be remembered for her gentle spirit, her creativity, her resilience, and the deep love she poured into those around her.

Memorial contributions may be made to Jefferson Baptist Church in honor of Melissa for mission trips, reflecting her heart for service and her desire to support meaningful work in her community.
