Richard Champion Profile Photo

Richard Martin Champion was born on October 26, 1962, in San Diego, California to Jeanne Larson and Gerald Champion. He was raised with his siblings, Dan, Jay, and Julie. For the last 32 years of his life, Richard resided in Sublimity, Oregon until recently after selling his home.

He had worked for Emery and Sons doing construction, pipelaying, and flagging. His work would take him all over the northwest and he would travel to where he was needed.

Richard was blessed as a father to his two daughters, Ashley, and Carla. His home had an open-door policy, and all his daughters’ friends were welcome. Richard’s home was the safe house where you could expect to have a shared meal and those who didn’t have families were always welcome to be part of his. During the holidays he always took people in and wanted them to feel at home. He was generous to a fault.

Richard had an adventurous spirit, he liked to go camping at Elkhorn, forage the woods for mushrooms and hunt for elk. He loved to treasure hunt and would try to find coins, gold pan and just find fun stuff. At home, he enjoyed growing a garden and loved his roses which he grew special varieties for his daughters.

He was very outgoing and he never met a stranger and would strike up a conversation with anyone. Richard had an unforgettable and animated spirit, whether it was trying to score the best deal or singing Sponge Bob Square Pants. He would bring a smile to those who he loved and love him just as much.

On December 9, 2022 hearts were broken with the revelation that Richard left this earth far too early. He was preceded in death by his father, Gerald Champion; siblings, Jay Champion and Julie Champion; stepson C.J. Basl. He is survived by his daughters, Ashley Champion and Carla Champion; mother, Jeanne Knight; grandchild, Ivy Champion; and brother, Dan Champion.
