Tom Burton Fitzgerald, born on April 2, 1952, in Albany, Oregon, to Lois and Vernon Fitzgerald, lived a life marked by determination, dedication to craftsmanship and loyalty. Tom's early years growing up in Scio, Oregon set the stage for a journey marked by academic excellence and a love for learning. Graduating with honors from Scio High School in 1970, Tom continued his education at Oregon State University's College of Business, where he earned a degree in Marketing Management in 1975.
Tom chose a career in titanium manufacturing at Oregon Metallurgical Titanium in Albany, retiring after 37 years of service. He was well respected and looked up to by many of his coworkers. He often referred to them as a "second family." He was also a long time member of the United Steelworkers union.
Even in his youth, Tom displayed a wide array of talents and interests, being part of the 4-H animal science program working with horses and cattle. Later in life he would build a special relationship with his appaloosa horse, Cheyenne. Tom was also an avid reader, favoring authors such as Stephen King, Cormac McCarthy, James Patterson, and James A. Michener. His passion for learning was matched by his enthusiasm for riding his Harley Fat Boy, exploring the open roads with a sense of freedom and adventure.
Tom's dedication to physical fitness was unwavering. He engaged in weight lifting, distance bicycling, running on the beach, swimming laps at the YMCA and maintaining an active lifestyle in general. On his property in Lebanon, he operated a Christmas tree farm for several years. Eventually he chose to let a large portion of those evergreens grow into a small forest, allowing him to enjoy the outdoors and practice forestry as a hobby.
His interest in historic weaponry saw him amass a collection of replicas, including swords, knives, whaling harpoons, and spears. Additionally, Tom's carpentry and woodworking skills were nothing short of remarkable; he even constructed much of his house by himself, and created many pieces of furniture there within, showcasing his meticulous craftsmanship and love for creating with his hands.
Tom is survived by his sister, Vernadene Anderson; his daughter, Kaitlin Sword and son-in-law, David Sword; and his granddaughter, Teagan Sword. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Lois, and his brother-in-law, Peter Anderson.
Tom Burton Fitzgerald's life was a testament to hard work and passion. His memory will be cherished by all who knew him. Memorial contributions in his honor can be made to ALS.org , an organization dedicated to finding a cure for Lou Geherig's disease.
